Description

These 100% beeswax skep candles are hand-made from the excess wax produced in Bee Inspired Eco Education bee hives.

Traditional skep beehive

Traditional skep shape

A skep is a basket-shaped beehive traditionally made from coiled straw or wicker with a small hole where the bees fly in and out. It dates back as far as the Bronze Age. The basket would be placed upside-down so that the bees could colonise the skep to make their honeycomb. However, often the whole hive had to be killed to harvest the honey. These days we use wooden framed hives that allow beekeepers to separate the brood chamber from the honey store.

Pure and clean

Our beeswax is carefully harvested and filtered so it is pure and clean. This ensures an exceptionally clean soot-free burn. We add nothing more than a cotton wick! In contrast to candles made from paraffin, our 100% beeswax candles emit no toxins when they are burnt. Some even say that they release negative into the atmosphere to help purify the air… we can’t find any scientific evidence to back this up, but as our candles have no added fragrance or colouring, they are definitely better to burn than other candles!

Long-lasting

These powerful little beeswax skep candles burn for 6 hours, far longer than candles made from paraffin. As with all candles, the first lighting is the most important. Make sure that you burn the skep candle for long enough to create a even wax pool that reaches the edge of the candle.

Naturally wonderful

The beeswax absorbs the scent of the hive, leading to a deliciously subtle smell of honey and earthy aromas. We love the natural variations in colour that come from the different forage that the bees find – each hives wax is unique!

Hand-crafted

These charming hand-crafted beeswax skep candles are both beautiful to look at and brilliant to burn. They will fill the room with a wonderful aroma and last for several sessions.

FAQs

Why is beeswax different colours?
There are lots of elements that affect the final colour of beeswax as it is a natural product. It can range from pale yellow to very dark, almost brown/yellow. The very first flakes of wax produced by the bees is white. They secrete it from glands on their abdomen. As it is used in the hive it is exposed to nectar, pollen and honey. The colours of these will vary depending on what the bees have been foraging on. As the wax ages it can also become a deeper shade. The colour can also be affected by the processing of the wax. If beeswax is melted at a higher temperature, it will be darker. It also depends on how much the beeswax is refined. At Bee Inspired Eco Education, we like to filter the wax just enough to remove contaminants but not so much as to remove all the delicious scents!
Why does beeswax smell so good?
Beeswax is a natural substance made by the bees. It absorbs the scents of the hive, including honey, nectar, pollen and wood.
Where do you source your beeswax?
Our beeswax comes from the Bee Inspired Eco Education bee hives that are placed in and around the Leeds area. We welcome donations of excess wax from other beekeepers in the area. The provenance of any non-BIEE wax is carefully recorded and the wax lovingly filtered and assessed prior to being used.
How do I stop my candle tunneling?
The first burn is the most important, especially for wider candles such as pillar candles. You need to burn it for long enough to allow the entire top surface of the wax to completely melt (all the way to the edge). If your candle has started to funnel (ie with the sides remaining), simply blow out the candle and make the top surface level again. You can do this by gently bending the sides into the melted wax pool if it is not too bad. Alternatively with a hairdryer or by trimming.
